The lore of the American militia man and his rifle, while not incorrect, is exaggerated. The vast majority of the American revolutionary militia were armed with common smoothbore hunting flintlocks, with the majority of those being the French "fusil de chasse".
"Fusil de chasse" translates roughly to "gun of the hunt" and is still a French term today used for "shotgun".
