Vehicle Survival Essentials That You Need!

In this video, we’re packing a bag for a trip to an urban area about two hours from home. Being prepared for emergencies, even close to civilization, is critical. I’ll walk you through my mental checklist for packing a solid go-bag, focusing on essentials to help you adapt to unexpected situations.

We’ll cover the key items in my checklist: food, fire, water, shelter, security, first aid, and communication. Each of these is critical for staying safe and self-sufficient in case of an emergency. I’ll share tips on choosing the right gear for each category, compact packing strategies, and why each item plays a role in urban survival. So whether it’s a short trip or you’re planning for longer stays, you’ll leave knowing how to prepare your bag like a pro and why it matters. Let’s dive in and get packed!

1. Vehicle Maintenance
• Check Fluids: Ensure oil, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield wiper fluid are all topped off.
• Tires: Make sure tires are properly inflated and in good condition, including a spare.
• Battery Health: Ensure the battery is fully charged and carry a portable jump starter.
• Fuel: Keep your tank full or at least half-full at all times, and consider having extra fuel in safe, approved containers if you’re in remote areas.

2. Emergency Kit Essentials

• First Aid Kit: Stock it with essentials, including trauma supplies like tourniquets, gauze, and bandages.
• Basic Tools: Include a wrench, screwdriver, multi-tool, duct tape, zip ties, and a tire repair kit.
• Fire Extinguisher: Keep a compact, vehicle-rated fire extinguisher accessible.
• Portable Power Bank: To charge devices, especially phones, in case of power outages.
• Navigation: Pack physical maps and a compass in case GPS fails.

3. Food and Supplies

Storage: At least 1 gallon per person per day for three days. Use containers that fit well in the vehicle without spilling.
• Non-Perishable Food: Pack high-energy foods, such as protein bars, canned goods, and trail mix.
Filtration: Consider a small water filter or purification tablets if you’re likely to run low on water.

4. Recovery Gear

• Tow Strap: Useful for pulling out vehicles stuck in mud, sand, or snow.
• Shovel and Traction Aids: Compact shovels and traction aids like sand ladders or even old carpet pieces can help in rough terrain.
• Winch (if applicable): A winch can be very useful in rough terrain but requires knowledge and training to use effectively.

5. Communication Tools
Two-Way Radio: Essential for areas with limited cell service.
• CB Radio or HAM Radio: Useful in rural or off-grid locations where communication with other operators can provide support.
• Signal Mirror and Whistle: For signaling if you are stranded.

6. Comfort and
Blankets or Sleeping Bags: Consider both cold-weather gear and emergency blankets.
• Tent or Tarp: Compact tents or tarps can provide if you’re stranded and need to stay overnight.
• Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Keep a change of clothes, especially socks and layers for colder climates.

7. Lighting and Visibility

• Flashlight and Headlamps: Ensure they’re reliable and pack extra batteries.
• Flares or Reflective Triangles: For visibility, especially at night or in poor weather.

8. Documentation and Essentials

Insurance and Identification: Keep copies of insurance, registration, and ID in a waterproof container.
• Cash: In case electronic payments are down, keep small bills on hand.
