After the US Civil War, Remington had a lot of surplus Remington New Army revolvers and components. To capitalize on this, as well as compete against the 1860 Henry, they started selling them converted into carbines. Initially they were percussion, but from 1872 on, you could also get them in rimfire cartridges.
