Short barrel is more accurate (ATF hates this)
Welcome to Polenar’s gusmiffin school.
Today we will be cutting an AR15 pencil barrel from 16" to about 12.5". Surprisingly this modification will actually slightly improve the accuracy of the rifle. This happens primarily because you change the ration between the length and girth of the barrel – girth stays the same so by shortening the length you make the barrel more rigid. A stiffer barrel produces less vibrations and movement and thus improving the accuracy.
Yes, some muzzle velocity will be lost and that can affect the point of impact but that wont make much change to overall accuracy.
