The Rollin White patent on bored through revolver cylinders for breach loading put a strangle hold on the firearms industry, with only Smith & Wesson being able to manufacture modern breach loading cartridge revolvers. Colt came out with the Thuer cartridge conversion, which loads from the front but still used center fire cartridges, in a way to avoid violating the Rollin White patent.
