What I have today is the Wolfhound from Helikon-Tex; I’ve been testing this out for the last couple of months and I like it a lot.
BUT……there are issues.
In this episode, I’m going to be sharing with you all the pros and cons that I have concerning this jacket.

Helikon-Tex WolfHound
Materials :
Windpack Nylon
YKK zippers
Climashield Apex insulation
Sizes : 2x small – 2x large
Colors : Black, Coyote, Grey, Green, Flecktarn, & more.
Versions :
There is a hooded version of this jacket that runs around $170
Weight : 15.2oz on my scale
Cost : $130 – watch out for some sellers online, they will scam you if you aren’t careful. I mentioned this site before & I will mention them again – Military1st is offering this jacket for over $200. That’s a scam! The hooded version is almost $250. This jacket isn’t worth those prices.
Features :
Review Pros :
Very comfortable.
Warm for the weight ++ Climashield Apex is a very good polyester insulation which is used not only by Helikon-Tex but the US Military, Arc’teryx and other companies.
As for a temp rating for this jacket, that is going to be so objective I rather not give one. Some people run hot and some run cold and that is going to determine the rating. With that being said, I can wear this jacket with a long sleeve merino shirt and be comfortable at 30f. With temps at 11F, a long sleeve merino wool shirt, a fleece sweater and this jacket and I am comfortable. Take all that I said here with a grain of salt as everyone is different.
Looks awesome
Plenty of pockets
Includes a pack bag
Fairly compressible
Good DWR treatment
Offers good wind resistance
Fair amount of pockets including an internal zippered pocket
Elastic in the armpits helps with movements
Hooded and non-hooded versions
The weight is very good for this jacket
Very good construction – I’ve had to bust Helikon-Tex’s balls before due to poor construction but luckily this jacket is excellent. No loose threads at all.
Price – the retail price of this jacket is excellent and in my opinion, it’s worth it.
Review Cons :
Sizing is off – this is fairly common with Helikon-Tex products. I normally wear a medium to large and had to go down to a small to get a good fit. Even with a small, there is enough space for a fleece jacket and additional layers
The Windpack Nylon isn’t a quiet material, it does make some noise when you are moving around. It’s not annoying or anything but noticeable.
The fabric used with this jacket is delicate so you have to be careful. This isn’t a bushcraft jacket, if you snag it on a stick it will rip. Be careful
Summary :
Ultimately, I really like this jacket – the price is great, the weight is great, it’s warm, adaptable and in general, it’s great.
Make sure not to overpay for this jacket if you desire that you want to pick one up too.
If you purchase one, be prepared to return it as it may take some time to figure out the right size.
