Forsvarets Spesialkommando (FSK)

Forsvarets Spesialkommando (FSK) (Special Operations Commando) is a special operations forces unit of the Special Operation Forces (Norwegian: Forsvarets Spesialstyrker). The unit was established in 1982 due to the increased risk of terrorist activity against Norwegian interests, including the oil platforms in the North Sea.

On 1 January 2014, the Special Operation Command (NORSOCOM), was established uniting the FSK and the Naval Special Operation Command (Norwegian: Marinejegerkommandoen) (MJK) under the one command in the Norwegian Armed Forces. In 2014, FSK established an all female unit Jegertroppen (Jeger Troop).

FSK has gone from being a cadre and -unit for paratroopers and the mobilization army, to being a professional unit with substantial experience, robustness, competency and capacity. The unit has been deployed internationally on several occasions and has received international recognition for its efforts.

The unit has a considerable amount of support from Norway’s political and leaders. The Parliament has decided that the Norwegian SOF are to be strengthened.

FSK recruits, selects and trains paratroopers and SOF operators.

FSK is on both national and international standby for special operations and counter-terrorism operations (alongside Marinejegerkommandoen). In addition, FSK is the competency and centre for all parachute and counter-terrorism training in the Armed Forces.

Marinejegerkommandoen (MJK)

Marinejegerkommandoen (MJK) (english: Naval Special Operations Commando) is the maritime/naval special warfare unit of the Special Operations Command and was established in 1953.

Marinejegerkommandoen plays an integral part in modern warfare operations. The unit carries out missions that require thorough planning, quick reaction, high precision, covert implementation, daring, courage and the ability to work independently. As with all SOF missions, they target objectives of high or critical strategic value.

Marinejegerkommandoen’s participation in Operation Enduring Freedom earned the unit the Navy Presidential Unit Citation on 8 February 2005. The Presidential Unit Citation is the highest unit award given by the United States to allied units and was awarded to all members of Task Force K-Bar.

William H. McRaven, a United States Navy Admiral who previously served as the commander of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), said in an interview with a newspaper in 2007 that he regarded the Special Operations Forces of Norway to be among the top special operations forces in the world.

A member of the MJK was in August 2020 awarded the Bronze Star Medal of the United States for extraordinary allied efforts during a mission in Afghanistan.

Kystjegerkommandoen (KJK)

Kystjegerkommandoen (KJK: in English "Coastal Ranger Commando") is a Norwegian amphibious unit trained to operate in littoral combat theatres, filling the role of a marine corps and coastal artillery.

The unit was created when it became clear that the coastal fortresses had to be abandoned due to their vulnerability to modern precision guided weapons. This was a gradual development, as the old coastal artillery branch of the Norwegian Armed Forces had been increasingly focusing on mobile operations, and less on coastal fortresses, for many years. With the establishment of the Ranger Command, this transition was complete.

KJK operatives are trained to be highly mobile in the littoral environment, using the Combat Boat 90 and occasionally helicopters. The CB90 is capable of landing troops directly on the shore. Max payload is 16 armed troops, and max speed is 40 knots (74 km/h). Their main against enemy vessels is the AGM-114 Hellfire missile, using a blast-fragmentation warhead. This can easily be carried in the CB90, but will (usually) be launched from ashore, taking advantage of Norway’s numerous islands and rugged coast. KJK maintain a strong focus on the ISTAR concept, and train to fight asymmetrical enemy tactics. KJK have trained with allied forces, where their CB90 have been embarked from the Dutch HNLMS Rotterdam LPD and the British HMS Albion. The unit was declared operational 17 August 2005. Home base is at Trondenes, Harstad, North Norway.
